Health and Safety Policy for Storage Crayford
Storage Crayford is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers, visitors, and contractors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with storage, removals, transportation, and related activities, and reflects our commitment to continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
Policy Statement
Storage Crayford will take all reasonably practicable steps to prevent injury and ill health arising from its operations. We aim to identify, assess, and control risks associated with lifting and handling, vehicle movements, storage of goods, use of equipment, and access to our premises. Health and safety considerations will be integrated into all planning and decision making for our storage and removal services.
This policy applies to all employees and to all persons who may be affected by our activities, including agency staff, contractors, and customers present on our premises or during removal and transport operations.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management holds overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented, monitored, and reviewed regularly. Management will provide clear direction on health and safety standards and ensure that sufficient resources are available to meet these standards.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for all significant hazards and that control measures are implemented and maintained. Providing information, instruction, training, and supervision to employees so they can carry out their work safely. Ensuring that plant, equipment, vehicles, and storage facilities are maintained in a safe condition. Investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses and implementing corrective actions. Promoting a positive health and safety culture within Storage Crayford.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Employees must:
Follow all safe systems of work, site rules, and instructions provided. Use correctly any equipment, personal protective equipment, and safety devices supplied. Report hazards, defects, accidents, incidents, or near misses to their manager without delay. Cooperate with management to enable Storage Crayford to fulfil its health and safety duties. Refrain from misusing or interfering with anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Storage Crayford undertakes regular risk assessments covering key activities, including manual handling of items, loading and unloading vehicles, stacking and storing goods, operating vehicles and lifting equipment, and working in and around storage areas and customer access zones.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe working procedures and to implement suitable control measures. These may include mechanical aids for lifting, safe stacking heights, designated walkways, high-visibility clothing in operational areas, and traffic management controls for moving vehicles.
Manual Handling and Lifting
The nature of storage and removal work often involves manual handling of furniture, boxes, and other items. Storage Crayford is committed to reducing the risk of injury by:
Assessing lifting tasks and avoiding unnecessary manual handling where possible. Providing appropriate equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, moving straps, and ramps. Training staff in safe lifting techniques, team lifting, and load assessment. Planning removal and delivery routes to minimise carrying distances and awkward handling.
Vehicle, Driving, and Transport Safety
Where vehicles are operated for removals or transport of goods, Storage Crayford will ensure that:
Vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Loads are secured properly to prevent shifting during transit. Drivers are competent, appropriately licensed, and aware of safe driving practices. Safe systems are in place for reversing, parking, and operating vehicles on or near the premises. Customers and visitors are kept separate from operational traffic areas wherever reasonably practicable.
Storage Facilities and Premises Safety
Storage Crayford will maintain its premises, storage units, and operational areas to ensure they are safe and suitable for use. This includes:
Keeping floors, corridors, and access routes clear and in good repair. Managing the condition and stability of racking, shelving, and stacking systems. Providing adequate lighting, ventilation, and where required, temperature control. Controlling access to restricted or high-risk areas. Implementing appropriate fire safety measures, including alarms, means of escape, and emergency signage.
Hazardous Substances and Restricted Items
Some items can present fire, chemical, or other hazards. Storage Crayford will take steps to ensure that such items are not stored or transported in a way that endangers people or property. Customers will be informed of any restrictions relating to hazardous, perishable, illegal, or otherwise unsuitable items. Staff will receive guidance on identifying and handling higher-risk goods in line with company procedures.
Information, Instruction, Training, and Supervision
Storage Crayford recognises that competent and informed staff are essential to good health and safety performance. We will:
Provide induction training for new employees and agency staff. Offer task-specific training including manual handling, equipment use, and emergency procedures. Refresh training periodically or when work methods, equipment, or legislation change. Ensure that supervision is appropriate to the level of risk and the competence of staff.
Consultation and Communication
Storage Crayford will encourage open communication on health and safety matters. Employees will be consulted on changes affecting their health and safety and are encouraged to raise concerns or suggestions for improvement. Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, signage, written procedures, and ongoing discussions between managers and staff.
Accidents, Incidents, and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported and recorded. Storage Crayford will investigate incidents to identify root causes and will implement appropriate corrective and preventative measures.
Emergency arrangements, including fire evacuation, first aid provision, and response to serious incidents, will be clearly communicated to employees and, where relevant, to customers and visitors. Drills and checks will be carried out at suitable intervals.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
Storage Crayford will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits, incident statistics, and staff feedback. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in operations, legislation, or identified risks.
We are committed to continually improving our health and safety management so that our storage and removal services remain safe, reliable, and responsibly managed for everyone who works with or uses Storage Crayford.
